How to Make 1 x 1 Cables Without a Needle

Currently on the needles: This great pattern called “Relativity” – it’s a long infinity scarf in honeycomb cables, and garter rib.

It’s easily memorized, but 30 inches of 1/1 left and right cables with a cable needle would be…less than pleasant.

1/1 cable crosses are super easy to do without a needle, though, thankfully, so I’ve explained them here.

Right Leaning 1×1 Cable
With yarn in back, insert the tip of your right needle into the second stitch on the left needle, from left to right.
Work the knit stitch, leaving the first and second stitch on the left needle.
Knit the first stitch.
Pull both stitches off the needle.

Left Leaning 1×1 Cable
With yarn in back, insert the tip of your right needle between the first and second stitch on the left needle.
Insert the tip of your right needle into the second stitch on the left needle, from left to right.
Work the knit stitch, leaving the first and second stitch on the left needle.
Knit the first stitch.
Pull both stitches off the needle.
